"From Hollywood to Hanoi" Movie Synopsis |
Acclaimed at the 1992 Telluride Film Festival, FROM HOLLYWOOD TO HANOI is Tiana Thi Thanh Nga's bold documentary tracing the filmmaker's emotional return to her Vietnamese homeland. Uprooted since 1996, Tiana eventually settled in California, landing leading roles in Hollywood films. In 1988, over her family's objections, she decided to journey to Vietnam and rediscover her heritage. Since then, she made twelve trips over five years, and filmed over seventy hours of footage with a Vietnamese crew she and her cameraman trained.
From Hollywood to Hanoi captures the myriad of emotions Tiana experienced as she reconnected with her clan of relatives, and sees firsthand the deep scars and social divisions that still exist as a result of the Vietnam War. Included are heartwrenching interviews with several Amerasians, the offspring of American GI's and Vietnamese women. Also captured is the resilient energy of this poor nation still battered by the past and eager to get on with the future. Throughout it all, Tiana's charm, determination, humor, and courage shine through.
